Music Industry Talk

Interview with Clara Waidley

Clara Waidley

Clara Waidley is an Alternative/Indie musician.

Why did you want to be a professional musician?

Music was one of the ways that could use my gifts to help the world. I loved the freedom of creating. Pursuing music as a career is a tumultuous journey, but I realized that I would much prefer this journey than any other one.

What inspires your music?

I think I am most inspired by the romanizations of simple, everyday life. I love the stories within the little moments. I also find a lot of inspiration in scenery - being able to absorb the vibe of the environment I'm in.

What things get you in the mood to write songs or do lyrics come spontaneously?

Ideas/concepts usually come to me spontaneously. I think most of my ideas come when I'm surfing, running, or just having time to myself. I don't know if I'm ever in the mood to write songs - but there have been times where I feel like I need to get something out musically. I try to honor those feelings because I know inspiration can fade if you don't act on it.

How do you want your music to affect people?

I hope my music offers comfort, and a healthy escape for people. I have enjoyed living in the little worlds I've created in my songs - and I hope others feel the same.

Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?

Before releasing/recording a song I usually play it for my sister. If I like the song and my sister likes the song that's all that matters to me.

How do you prepare for a gig?

Before a show I like to write down the songs I am going to play. I might try and play through some of them earlier in the day. I'm not a fan of over-preparing. I would much rather be on the verge of winging it. For me, over preparing equals over thinking, and over thinking just gives me anxiety.

What is your favorite song that you';ve written?

One of my favorite songs that I have written is called "radio angel". I feel like that song contains so much of my soul. My sister and I were talking one day, and she said, "our music will blow up after we die". From there I started thinking about how many artists have burned out tragically. It will always be a meaningful song for me.

Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?

I think my song "25" has had some interesting reactions, haha. Some people think it's a fun song, and then other people think that I must have been in a deep depression while writing the song.

What are some ways that you promote yourself?

I do a lot of busking. It's a great way to meet people in the area and get your music out there. I also put effort into marketing myself on social media.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?

The biggest challenge of my career has been the blind, stubborn belief that music is going to work out for me without necessarily any concrete proof backing up that I'm correct. It's funny to me that all of my problems come from not giving up.

What have been your favorite places to tour?

I don't think I necessarily have a favorite place to tour. I love playing anywhere near the coast. I'm fortunate to have had wonderful experiences in different places throughout the country.

Are there advantages to being an independent musician?

The advantage of being an independent musician is that you're the boss of your career, your creativity, and your time. Being the boss is stressful, but if you're able to manage all of the elements in a healthy way it can be a great thing.
