Interview with Doc Sanchez

Doc Sanchaz

For the last 20 years Dr Sanchez has played professionally as a Latin Guitarist all over Europe and Australasia. We interview him below.

How did you promote yourself before social media, and also in the social media age?

Pre Social Media, it was a lot of emails, before that was going venue to venue with CD demos burnt on the home computer and buying the venue promoter lots of beers. The best promotion though after you score a gig... is the gig itself. If it's a great show, then thats the best promo ever!

What have been your favourite gig(s)?

Flown to the jungle in Borneo for a 10 day gig was pretty cool.

How do you prepare for a major gig?

I don't really, other than just knowing the material really really well. Big gigs are easy, smaller gigs are harder and require more finesse.

Do you have any tips for making international trips more economical?

Date a pilot.

What are some key things that have helped your career?

Understanding how the industy works, and not taking "no" for an answer.

Why drove you to want to spend your life performing?

I was no good at cleaning toilets, so I naturally drifted into being a musician.

What inspires your music?

Beautiful people, Warm Countries, Different Rhythms in cultures and Red wine.

I assume you love traveling, what have been your favourite places to visit?

Croatia, Spain, Borneo.

Regarding managing bands, what are some of the best ways artists can promote themselves?

There are millions of musicans now. You need to stand out by writing great tracks, pushing hard, having a strong online prescence and delivering amazing live shows. It's a lot of work,

Remember, there is an audience for everyone, you just have to find it and nail it!

Do you manage yourself? Why/Why Not?

Yes. Because I personally enjoy the hunt of a gig. If someone else was doing it for me, I'd get lazy.
