Music Industry Talk

Interview with Heidi Maria

Heidi Maria

Heidi Maria is a Folk singer.

Why did you want to be a professional musician?

When I was little I wanted to be just like my Mom and my Mom had done it professionally in Canada. One of my favorite times as a little girl was sitting on her bed with her as she would sing and play guitar, and I would sing along with her. The music would move my soul and all I wanted to do was sing and play guitar from as far back as I can remember.

What inspires your music?

Life. Relationships. Heartbreak. Love. Emotions. Nature. Cities. The ups and downs and everything in between.

What things get you in the mood to write songs or do lyrics come spontaneously?

The lyrics and music usually come to me spontaneously but if I sit down with my guitar to write it's usually at night with a cup of coffee.

How do you want your music to affect people?

Always in a good way. For example, if my songs about heartbreak end up bringing someone to visit a memory regarding their own heartbreak, I hope they acknowledge it as in the past and how far they have come since then.

Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?

Sometimes I do. Not always. If I am in the mood to play a new one at a gig, I just throw it out there and see the response.

How do you prepare for a gig?

Rehearsals usually with Maria and coffee.

What is your favorite song that you've written?

There is a new one I am working on that I sing to my little boy that is my favorite right now. It's not finished yet so I can't say anymore about it but prior to this song I would have to say my favorite was The Star Song.

Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?

There is a video on my YouTube account of my song The Chess Game posted years ago that had a lot more views than I expected at the time.

What are some ways that you promote yourself?

Social media platforms most definitely like my Instagram and Facebook accounts, but I think there is still something to street promotion for getting the word out about an upcoming gig or other news.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?

I faced some medical challenges back in 2013 that I had to overcome to get back to writing and playing my music. Then my Mom who I play with also faced some medical challenges later on. Both times I had to take a time out and it's challenging gathering momentum again after being away from music for a time.

What have been your favorite places to tour?

Toronto.

Are there advantages to being an independent musician?

Setting your own schedule for writing, recording, rehearsal, gigging, etc. Which definitely comes in handy with having a little one :)
