Interview with Adrianna Freeman
Adrianna Freeman is a country singer.
Why did you want to do music professionally?
I was inspired by my grandfather "Water Freeman" and my father "Edward Freeman". They both wanted to be Country Music Singers. They instilled the love of Country Music in me. I decided when I was young that I also wanted to be a Country Music singer, so I am the 3rd generation in my family.
What inspires your music?
I get inspired by different things. I also like to put a message in my music. I like to write about real-life experiences. I write about things that move me or topics I feel strongly about.
What things get you in the mood to write songs or do lyrics come spontaneously?
I don't need a whole lot. Just a thought or an experience I or someone I know has gone through. Just a pad, my guitar, and something to write with.
How do you want your music to affect people?
In a positive way.
Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?
I test them out on my friends and family, but I usually trust my gut. However, just recently I started asking the fans which song they think should be the next single.
How do you prepare for a gig?
Practice and just show up and sing. I don't have any special needs. Just an audience ready to hear some good music is really all I need.
What is your favorite song that you've written?
Blue. Bluer Than Bluegrass
Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?
Yes, I released a song earlier this year called "I Ran Out of Whiskey Yesterday". Well people either loved it or hated it. The songs hits on some tough topics, but it embodies the essence of country music's true spirit- "three chords and the truth". Some folks thought the song was a political song, but it was not, it was truly about the current American struggle and how we need to work together to make our country better for the people.
What are some ways that you promote yourself?
Social media is my main promotion vehicle right now. I just finished my album, this is the 1st album I have cut in 12 years, so I am trying to build interest and increase my following there. I am not as comfortable with social media, so I am having to learn to embrace it. I have also created visual content for my latest release Halo and have been supporting the promotion of that.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Changing the gatekeepers' minds and overcoming pre-conceived notions.
What have been your favorite places to tour?
Well, I haven't toured in a while, but if I have to pick a state it would be touring in Florida around my hometown. They always show up for me!
Are there advantages to being an independent musician?
Yes. I love that I don't have anyone telling me what I should write and sing. I get to create music on my own terms and there is something really freeing about that.
