Interview with Dan Maguire

Dan Maguire

Dan Maguire is a singer.

Why did you want to do music professionally?

Since I was about 11 I have been intrigued with music, rock and roll specifically. I was drawn to the songs, the artists, all of it. It was exciting. Then when I started learning to play an instrument, it's like the other piece came together. Music is something that I naturally think about creatively and strategically. It's always there, in my head. So, I've kept pursuing it through the years, and it's been going pretty well.

What inspires your music?

Usually my family. Other times, the ideas of redemption, overcoming adversity and being aware that we are all fighting a silent battle so be kind.

What things get you in the mood to write songs, or do lyrics come spontaneously?

I am always playing my guitar. It is a habit behavior. I'll hear something I like and develop parts. Then I'll play it and play it and melodies and lyrics reveal themselves. Somehow, those lyrics capture what inspires me.

How do you want your music to affect people?

I hope to create moments of calm and assurance for listeners who may be wrestling with doubts and anxieties, offering a sense of optimism, even if only for a moment, that "maybe everything's gonna be okay."

Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?

I do! I'll record them into my phone and send them to good friends and see what they have to say. They're friends, so they're gonna be kind and reluctant to give a fully critical opinion. Except when they play the song for their kids, then I get the read deal.

So, an open stage is another great way to get feedback. You also get the real deal from strangers.

How do you prepare for a gig?

I practice all the time and keep a consistent schedule. I think performing is a perishable skill, and one that needs constant application to evolve and grow. I try to do 10 minutes of vocal exercises daily and do 30 minutes of vocal exercises an hour so before playing.

What is your favorite song that you've written?

Maeve. This song captures a family tragedy. I wrote it because I wanted to have an active role in coloring the experience as it was unfolding, and what it felt like as life progressed.

Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?

I have a song called Honeybee I wrote for my youngest daughter. 2 years ago, I played it at an intimate, outside venue in Eureka Springs, AR. A week or so after the gig, I got a message from a young woman who told me she loved the song, and knowing what it was about brought her to tears. I was stunned by that.

What are some ways that you promote yourself?

Social media primarily, and an active show schedule. A constant presence and messaging.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?

The inner critic who doesn't want any of us to succeed in something we enjoy. I just keep going and get myself successes and achievements that are reference points to help quiet that down.

What have been your favorite places to tour?

Tulsa and NW Arkansas. I'm from Tulsa and love that city, and the Ozarks area is very nostalgic to me

Are there advantages to being an independent musician?

Yes. No meetings.

Honestly, I like making contact and developing relationships on my own. I enjoy representing myself to people and backing it all up with my music and handling myself well.
