Interview with Kristi Jacques
Kristi Jacques is a Pop Rock/Rock musician.
Why did you want to do music professionally?
Music has always been part of my life. When I was younger, my parents took me to New York City to see Cats on Broadway. I decided I wanted to become a Broadway singer. That later evolved into a musician, playing guitar and singing. I believe because I was told so often that I would never make it and I needed a real job, I wanted it even more, but I still let go of that dream a long time ago, until 2020 when everything changed.
What inspires your music?
I think life in general really. I am glad that I wasn't able to pursue the dream so many years ago, because I am a much different person now. Everything that I've gone through in my life, the mistakes, the successes, influences, all of it, have made me who I am today. That comes through in my music. Or at least I hope it does.
What things get you in the mood to write songs, or do lyrics come spontaneously?
Lyrics are usually spontaneous for me. I've had to wake up in the middle of the night to write something down. It could be a word, a phrase, a feeling, or even an entire song. Not sure where it all comes from, but I'll take it.
How do you want your music to affect people?
I hope that people can connect with the songs. All of the songs are so different, but each one tells a story that I believe can pertain to almost everyone. When your song connects with someone emotionally, that is an amazing thing.
Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?
To be honest, I don't. lol I like to dive in headfirst and just do it. I have a tendency to overthink things, which is why I do it this way.
How do you prepare for a gig?
Right now, I am not performing anywhere live due to some health issues. I am getting better, so I hope to be able to perform sooner rather than later. I work on it every day.
What is your favorite song that you've written?
I guess I have a few, each for a different reason. The song Mama, I Love You, was written about my mom. She is 94 years old and the song put the biggest smile on her face. That makes me incredibly happy. Then there is Limitless, which is really about my health struggles and the fact that they don't exist in my dreams.
Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?
The heaviest song on the album, Get Outta My Way, has gotten the most attention. It was co-written by Clint Lowery from Sevendust and is another favorite. I guess I'm not really that surprised. It's a pretty good song if I do say so myself.
What are some ways that you promote yourself?
I am always on social media; Facebook and Instagram. I haven't really gotten into TikTok yet, but I suppose I should at some point. I promote from my website, and I work with a publicist who is great. I am really not the best at self-promotion, but I do what I can.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Trying to stand apart from all of the other independent musicians out there. Everything is so different now in the music world, and anyone can add music to the streaming platforms. Everyone has a YouTube channel. I just don't want to get lost in the chaos.
Are there advantages to being an independent musician?
There are no real deadlines, except for those I place on myself. I do things at my own pace. I don't have to "fit in" to any category or genre. I can just write what I'm feeling, what makes me happy.
