Interview with Michael B Sutton
Michael B Sutton is a gospal musician.
Why did you want to do music professionally?
Music has been the heartbeat of my life ever since my early days in Gospel. I couldn't resist the call to turn my passion into a profession. The energy of creating something out of thin air and connecting with people through melodies and lyrics was irresistible.
What inspires your music?
My inspiration flows from the rich tapestry of experiences I've gathered over the years. The world around me, my relationships, and the emotions that come with them all play a part. Collaborating with legends like Michael Jackson and Diana Ross has also left an indelible mark on my creative wellspring.
What things get you in the mood to write songs, or do lyrics come spontaneously?
It's a bit of both, really. Sometimes, I'll sit down with the intention to write, drawing from my experiences and emotions. Other times, lyrics just burst forth when I least expect them. Capturing those spontaneous moments is like capturing lightning in a bottle.
How do you want your music to affect people?
I've always aimed for my music to be a conduit for emotions. Whether it's getting people on their feet or touching their hearts with a ballad, I want listeners to feel a connection. Music has the power to uplift, heal, and unite, and I hope my work accomplishes just that.
Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?
Absolutely, I believe in the importance of feedback. I'll share my work with trusted friends, fellow musicians, and collaborators. Their insights help me refine my songs and ensure they resonate with a broader audience.
How do you prepare for a gig?
Preparation is key. I'll meticulously rehearse with my band, ensuring that our performance is polished and tight. Selecting the right setlist is crucial; I want to take the audience on a journey that they'll remember.
What is your favorite song that you've written?
It's like asking a parent to pick their favorite child! But if I had to choose, "Down to Love Town" holds a special place. It embodies the essence of the Disco era and the joy it brought to people's lives.
Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?
Oh, absolutely. Music's impact is often deeply personal and subjective. I've received messages from fans sharing how a particular song helped them through tough times. Those moments of unexpected connection never cease to amaze me.
What are some ways that you promote yourself?
Social media has become an incredible tool for connecting directly with fans. I also believe in the power of collaborations; working with fellow artists and being part of exciting projects naturally helps spread the word.
What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Adapting to the ever-changing music industry has been a challenge. Staying true to my artistry while embracing new trends and technologies has required a delicate balance.
What have been your favorite places to tour?
Touring has gifted me experiences in diverse locations. Each place has its charm and energy that leaves a mark on me.
Are there advantages to being an independent musician?
Independence grants me the freedom to explore my creativity without constraints. It allows me to make authentic artistic choices and engage directly with fans, which is incredibly rewarding.
