Interview with Simone Miller
Simone Miller is a singer and actress.
Why did you want to do music professionally?
I grew up surrounded by music. Music was always playing in my home and I have a lot of family and friends that are working musicians. From a very early age there wasn't a doubt in my mind that I was meant to pursue music. I was practically singing before I could speak and humming along to any and every melody I heard. I am truly passionate about music and don't really feel the same way for anything else, except acting.
What inspires your music?
Anything and everything. My most recent single "Acquaintance" was originally inspired by a Zoom class I was in during quarantine. All I could think of was how much I didn't want to be there anymore and the first lyrics of the song were born. Luckily I happened to be sitting next to a piano so I could continue writing, as my zoom class went on it's boring way.
What things get you in the mood to write songs, or do lyrics come spontaneously?
I would say lyrics actually tend to come to me spontaneously. When they do, I always write them down, or voice note them if I'm not next to a piano so I can expand on my ideas later. There is no rhyme or reason to my writing process. When inspiration strikes I just roll with it.
How do you want your music to affect people?
I write my truth and I appreciate that people are able to interpret that however they want. Ultimately I just want my music to be a safe space for my obscure observations about the world around me and I hope I can offer that same safe space to all my supporters!
Do you test out your songs before releasing them? How do you do this?
Yes! I am very passionate about my music so often I can't wait to share my newest creations with friends and family. I love getting their opinion on what I play them. Often their reactions to my music inspires how I choose to advertise what I put out.
How do you prepare for a gig?
On the day of the performance, I have a little tradition that helps me stay focused and in the zone. I find myself singing 'Someone Gets Hurt' from the musical Mean Girls, which helps me with vowel modification and has become an essential part of my routine.
What is your favorite song that you've written?
Older! It was one of the first songs I wrote and I'm super proud of it. Its creation process was deeply inspiring, allowing me to fully articulate my thoughts and emotions. As someone who struggles with change, "Older" helped me navigate the challenges of growing up and continues to resonate with me to this day.
Has there been a reaction to one of your songs that you've been surprised by?
When I began my career in acting, few people knew that I also had a passion for singing. That all changed with the release of "Dry Eyes." Most people were surprised to hear it wasn't traditional pop but filled with vocal riffs and inflections.
What are some ways that you promote yourself?

What would you say has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Discovering my true artistic identity has been a challenging journey for me. I love so many different styles and genres, it's difficult for me to commit to just one. "Dry Eyes" leans more towards contemporary pop, while "Older" has R&B influences and "Acquaintance" takes on an alternative/indie sound. I draw inspiration from everything around me, and while I don't mind being versatile, it can make it challenging to maintain a consistent style.
What have been your favourite places to tour?
I loved performing at Rebel in Toronto, ON. I had the honor of opening up for two incredible bands (The Arkells and Blue Rodeo) who paved the way for young Canadian artists like myself. The experience of performing on a large stage with a talented 5-piece band, opening for a big act, was simply unforgettable. I loved engaging with the audience and the other performers.
Are there advantages to being an independent musician?
For sure! As an independent musician, I have the freedom to fully explore my musical vision without any restrictions and on my own time line. This allows me to experiment and grow as an artist, ultimately finding my own unique sound and artistic identity. While I understand the benefits of signing with a label, I am currently content with being independent, as it enables me to fully explore all types of musical realms.
